Fall is the season of festivals, so I hope you’ve stretched properly over the last few weeks, because this weekend is chock full of ’em.
>> The annual Crafty Bastards fair is this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on 18th Street in Adams Morgan. Grab your worn canvas Trader Joe’s bag and get ready to collect all the quirky hand-sewn shirts and beaded earrings your little heart desires. After you’ve crossed everyone off your Christmas shopping list, have a tasty Italian Ice and check out the breakdancing competition at 3 p.m., or one of the bands taking stage at the Performance Pit. Later, hit up the after party at Cue Bar on U Street at 10 p.m., and since the Crafters expect that you’ll want to empty your wallet at the fair, they’re thanking their patrons with giveaways and drink specials.
>> Who knew the Library of Congress knew how to show us a good time? Okay, it probably won’t be a party a la Crafty Bastards, but they are throwing the National Book Festival on the Mall this Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is divided by genre, such as “History & Biography,” “Mysteries & Thrillers,” “Poetry,” and “Teens & Children.” Over 70 authors, illustrators, and poets will be on-hand to speak to avid bibliophiles of all ages. In fact, DCist proposes a scavenger hunt: Who ever provides us with autographs from George Pelecanos, Bob Woodward, Poet Laureate Donald Hall, and event sponsor Laura Bush, wins! What do you win? A life-long love of literacy, of course.
>> Last week we briefly mentioned the Asian Pacific American Film Festival, which starts in earnest tomorrow night. Get your tickets now for Americanese, a story of couples dealing with the subtle differences in interracial relationships, playing at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Landmark E Street Cinema. You can find screenings for the rest of the festival, which lasts until October 7, everywhere from the Arlington Arts Center to the Goethe-Institut. If you missed their kick-off celebration last Thursday, you’re in luck, because these guys like to party, so stop by Chloe Restaurant for their opening night reception tomorrow after the showing. Get in free with your ticket stub or if you email guestlist [at] dcnrg [dot] org (otherwise it’s $10) and take advantage of the free prizes and open bar for ladies until 11 p.m.
