After last week, and especially yesterday and today, probably the busiest weekend in October for classical music, things slow down a little this week. Not to worry, there are concerts for you to hear and some good ones at that.

TOP PICKS:
>> A week from today (October 22, 7 p.m.), there are still tickets for the recital by Croatian piano virtuoso Ivo Pogorelich at the George Mason University Center for the Arts, way out in Fairfax. It is the same venue where he played on his last trip to the Washington area, two years ago, when he was received with generous ovations. I have no idea what he is planning to play, but it should be worth the trip. Tickets: $22 to $44.

>> On Wednesday (October 18, 8 p.m.), there is a concert that attracts more for what will be played. A group calling itself Montage Music Society will be joined by mezzo-soprano Janna Baty for a program of music by Schoenberg and Zemlinsky. The former composer’s Verklärte Nacht, in a transcription for piano trio by Eduard Steuermann, will be matched with Schoenberg and Zemlinsky’s settings of Dehmel songs and the North American premiere of Zemlinsky’s cello sonata. Also, did I mention that this will be at the Library of Congress and therefore free? To get some background on this unusual music, there is a pre-concert presentation with cellist Marc Moskovitz, at 6:15 p.m.

>> Our friends up in Charm City like it when I tell you people to Get In On It with some music in The City That Reads. You opera fans may be wondering what to do with yourselves waiting for the next production from Washington National Opera. A trip to Baltimore Opera could do the trick, with their production of Rossini’s tragic opera L’Assedio di Corinto (The Siege of Corinth). I was at the prima list night, and while it may not be a particularly great opera, the cast is very strong and you Rossini completists may not have a chance to hear this one live again for a while. Remaining performances are scheduled for Wednesday (October 18, 7:30 p.m.), Friday (October 20, 8:15 p.m.), and next Sunday (3 p.m.).
