What’s up, D.C.? Remember those halcyon days of 70 degrees a few weeks ago? Yeah, now hit yourself over the head* to induce amnesia and get ready for another chilly day. Tonight we could even see a few more flurries. (*Note: the DCist legal department does not advise this treatment for extreme cases of it’s-actually-winter-itis)
State of Emergency: Yesterday, the District’s Board of Education passed the “Emergency Student Achievement Act of 2007” in an attempt to counter Mayor Adrian Fenty’s school takeover scheme. In a last-ditch effort to avoid obsolescence, the board proposes an 18-month plan to increase resources for special eduction and raise the number of students who meet proficiency standards by ten percent. They would also have more power to negotiate collective bargaining agreements with unions. Helpfully, School Superintendent Clifford B. Janey refuses to say whether he supports the Mayor’s or school board’s plan, saying, “You’re not going to get me into that.” As the School Superintendent, what can we get him into, then? The D.C. City Council will meet today to discuss both school reform proposals.
Arrest Made in Death of Teen: Another teenager has been arrested in the shooting death of 17-year-old Taleshia Ford. A 19-year-old Silver Spring man is charged with first degree murder. Ford was killed at Club 1919, a venue that admits minors and also has a bar for the over-21 set. The shooting sparked a flurry of debate over all-ages shows in the District and caused Councilman Jim Graham to propose various new bans on such clubs.
Briefly Noted: D.C. in the black for tenth straight year. (Woo Hoo!)… Missing woman found in trunk of her own car… Fenty and Lanier respond to this weekend’s four murders in five hours… Help wanted in Fairfax County…
This Day in DCist: Last year we checked out the Sunday-morning battle over double parking. We also turned to good old Rand McNally in a hunt for NoMa, AdMo and DuCi.
