We hope you had a relaxing, if not warm, holiday weekend, Washington. Mixed in with the egg decorating and good cheer, we sure noticed a lot of grumbling about the ongoing cold snap (along with those flurries on Friday night), so let’s get right down to the all-important question: When will this misery end? CapitalWeather.com is breaking it down like so: Most of this week will still see cold temps in the morning, with highs reaching up into the 50s and a good chance of rain mid-week. On Friday, we should see our first “normal” day, when it’ll finally warm up into the 60s.
Friendship Heights Development Causes Split: The Examiner takes a look at the hubbub surrounding a proposed new mixed-use development at 5220 Wisconsin Ave. NW, which would feed directly into the Friendship Heights metro station. Ward 3 Council Member Mary Cheh and at-large Council Member Kwame Brown stand poised at opposite ends of the debate about whether the development is the epitome of “smart growth” or a recipe for a traffic disaster (Cheh is for it, Brown against).
Fire on Green Line Prompts Shutdown: An overheated engine on a brand new rail car on the Green line caused a fire yesterday morning, prompting Metro to shut down the Waterfront-SEU station for several hours. Thirty to 70 riders were evacuated, and no one was injured in the blaze. Metro told the Post they do not believe the malfunction is part of a larger problem with the Alstom 6000-series cars, the kind of car involved in what they’re calling a “very unusual” engine fire.
Briefly Noted: Maryland health bills stall at close of legislative session … Commission will examine Northern Virginia’s water supply … Coyotes pose danger to area pets right now … Cold weather didn’t stop MLK Jr. parade.
This Day in DCist: Last year our incredible classical music writer recommended his top concerts for the week, just like he always does.
