Ahh. Fifty-eight degrees, Washington. Fifty-eight! That’s what the temperature is right now according to my trusty OS X weather widget, and I couldn’t be more pleased: with a broken office A/C office unit and a floor of the building prone to soaking up heat, things have been a little warm around here. A last-minute spring extension sounds great, and that’s just what we’re in for: temps will barely top 70 until the weekend (although tomorrow may bring rain).
Change Of Plans For Gun Giveaway: The Post reports that the gun raffle we discussed yesterday has been declared illegal after all, having run afoul of state anti-gambling laws. But never fear! The VCDL simply had to adjust the terms of the raffle, making eligibility contingent on showing up at tonight’s meeting rather than on having spent money at the gun stores the raffle is designed to benefit. Preemptive congratulations to whoever walks away with that shiny new Browning Varmint Stalker.
O’Malley Issues Vetoes: Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has just vetoed two measures, according to the AP (via WTOP). One bill would have made it easier for convicted drug dealers to receive parole, with an eye toward getting them into treatment. The other would have allowed police departments to sell or exchange retired firearms.
Sorry Teens, No More Robo-Tripping: What do you do if you’re a pathetic teenager desperate to enter an altered state but without access to solvent fumes, hundreds of morning glory seeds, or any other totally unappealing but readily available drug? Why, you consume a disgusting amount of cough syrup, of course — but perhaps not for much longer. As NBC4 tells us, some local retailers — most notably Giant Food & Drug — are going to stop selling dextromethorphan-containing medicines to customers under 18. It was about one year ago that buying Sudafed began to require an ID.
Briefly Noted: Smithsonian official leaving in September after payouts of inappropriate bonuses… Illegal gambling operation busted in Prince William County… Water main break in Bethesda may affect morning commute… String of attacks on women in Rosslyn may be related… Two arrested for drive-by shooting…
This Day In DCist: One year ago today we lamented Baltimore’s lack of hospitality and Mayor Williams’ potty mouth. Two years ago we watched the beginning of the kickball lawsuit and welcomed interstate wine shipments.
