Disturbing news out of the Columbia Heights neighborhood, as reports emerge about a 9 a.m. shooting at a crowded bus stop this morning at the corner of Georgia Ave. and Columbia Rd. NW. A woman being described as a Latino woman in her mid to late 30s is in critical condition at Howard University Hospital after being shot in the head by a man who fled on a bicycle.
The shooting ocurred as students at nearby Bruce Monroe Elementary School were starting classes. The school is currently on lockdown, and at least four of students witnessed the shooting, according to WTOP. Police told the Post they were looking for as many as three people who may be involved in the shooting, and say they are not sure why the woman was targeted. NBC4 spoke to a witness who said a Latino man and woman were walking across the street having an argument. The witness said he heard a pop and then saw the woman lying on the ground.
