Travel + Leisure magazine has released their 2007 list of “America’s Favorite Cities”, which ranks D.C. as sub-par in most categories when compared to 24 other U.S. cities.

Evaluated by our own residents, we came in a lowly No. 23 on the hotness meter, and No. 22 on the stylish (that’s out of a 1-25 ranking, 25 = bad, not good.) Visitors ranked Washington No. 24 on the people-I-like-to-look-at list and were slightly kinder to our wardrobes’, putting us at 18. We’re having a hard time accepting the idea that Atlanta has more style than the District. And that almost every major city in America is home to better-looking people, with the exception of Philadelphia.

We don’t get points for friendly, either, coming in at 23 – but then we’re not, really. Maybe we should make more of an effort to avoid using the elbows when dealing with tourists standing on the left side of the escalator.

D.C. did rank No. 1 was for being worldly and having an international culture, as well as for more obvious choices like notable architecture, monuments and museums.

We’re in the top 10 for theater, but falling below cities Boston and Chicago strikes us as a bit off. Washington’s theater scene is well-known, well-rounded, and well-respected.

Other rankings include No. 13 for gay-friendliness, No. 23 for food/dining, and No. 20 for our singles scene. Check out the full list of rankings here and let us know what you think of Travel + Leisure’s take on Washington in the comments.
