Oscar Ramiro Ortega (U.S. Park Police)The man accused of firing a gun at the White House on November 11 and breaking at least one window on the presidential residence appeared for the first time inside a Washington courtroom this afternoon, where he was appointed a public defender. Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, a 21-year-old resident of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was also ordered to be held without bond on charges of attempting to assassinate the president or a member of his staff. The charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
We’re also learning more about Ortega-Hernandez in the days following his capture in Pennsylvania. The New York Times reports that the alleged shooter had dabbled in mixed martial arts fighting, winning his only sanctioned bout by technical knockout after mounting his opponent and repeatedly “pummeling him in the face.”
Ortega-Hernandez will next appear in Magistrate Judge Alan Kay’s courtroom on November 28, at which point the results of a psychological evaluation will be revealed.
