Friday was a rare day for D.C.—we were put under a Tornado Warning, sending residents scrambling for cover as strong storms tore across the region.
No tornado ended up hitting D.C., though, but the Post reports that 11 were reported throughout the region. Maryland got the brunt of the inclement weather—nine hit in the Old Line State, with three touching down in Montgomery County and one each in Anne Arundel, Howard and Prince George’s County.
The last big tornado to hit the region was in 2001, when a twister touched down in College Park and tore across the University of Maryland campus, killing two. One of the bigger tornadoes to hit D.C. came in 1927, when a twister struck parts of Capitol Hill, destroying some 372 homes and leaving one person dead. The city was quick to respond, though, as evidenced by a Post article on the storm:
