You don’t have to be a math whiz to enjoy Pi Day Thursday (3.14)—just bring an empty stomach and you’ll be good. When it comes to food, the day devoted to the mathematical constant (approximately 3.14159) gives you a chance to indulge on pie and talk about math. Here’s where to finally get your piece of the π in D.C.
Pi pregame
As if getting lit on Pi Day wasn’t enough, Mess Hall is launching its inaugural “Bake & Take” pie-making class on Wednesday. You’ll get hands-on experience from pie maker Jenna Huntsberger, founder and head baker of Whisked!, and she’ll show you how to craft the perfect pie crust while you knock back some wine. Pay attention and don’t drink too much, because you’ll be expected to use what you just learned to make both an apple and a cherry pie. This event is sold out, but there is a waitlist. (Mess Hall, 6:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m., $65 for all ingredients, wine and a take away box)
Pi(e) à la mode
Indulge your sweet tooth at Milk Bar for a slice of Crack Pie with soft serve for $10 at all of its stores. For the uninformed, the Crack Pie boasts a toasted oat crust and gooey butter filling. For Pi Day, it’ll be served with Cereal Milk Soft Serve on the side— that’s made out of milk, cornflakes, brown sugar and a pinch of salt. (Milk Bar locations, promotion runs all day)
Subtract $3.14 from your check
Local chain Pizzeria Paradiso honors Pi Day by subtracting $3.14 from your check when you order a small pizza and a draft beer. You can factor the promotion in at all six of the eatery’s locations. (Pizza Paradiso, promotion runs all day)
Nerding out in the Bayou (Bakery)
Swing by Bayou Bakery in Arlington for a special selection of four-inch individual pies exclusive to the day for $5 each. Your options include chocolate pecan, lemon icebox, Virginia peanut, and chocolate pecan. Slices of larger pies are $3.14 each. (Bayou Bakery, 7 a.m.-7 p.m., $3.14 per pie slice, $5 per mini pie)
Dangerously Delicious Pi
As they do every year, Dangerously Delicious Pies is serving up a Pi Day happy hour. Score a piece of pie for $3.14, as well as drink specials at the bar all night and a free show with local bands, including Allthebestkids. (Dangerously Delicious Pies, 7 p.m.-11 p.m.)
Pi of all shapes and sizes
Dyllan’s Raw Bar Grill gets in on the act with a three-course, prix fixe menu priced at $31.40. It comes with a spicy goat cheese tart with roasted seasonal vegetables, followed by a choice of roasted chicken pot pie or beetball pot pie with seasonal vegetables. For dessert, expect key lime pie and apple crumble pie. You can wash it all down with a pre-selected glass of Pi-not Noir or Pi-not Grigio. (Dyllan’s Raw Bar Grill, lunch 11 a.m.- 4 p.m., dinner 5 p.m.-11 p.m., price excludes tax and gratuity)
Pi and a beer
Need a break from all the pie? Matchbox is offering pours of its signature IPA for $3.14. The New England-style pale ale from Virginia’s Lost Rhino Brewing Company normally goes for $8.25. (Matchbox locations, promotion runs all day)
