More WMATA … Davis Calls for Inquiry: Oh boy, Congress is getting involved in the WMATA situation. Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.), the chairman of the powerful House Government Reform Committee has called on the Government Accountability Office — which is Congress’ investigative arm — to conduct an inquiry into how the region’s transit system has spent its money and managed itself, the Post reports. Davis wants hearings in July.
DCist asks, what will happen to the light wind that’s currently blowing in the direction of our area getting a committed regional funding source for WMATA? Maryland’s transportation secretary, Robert Flanagan, may have an answer to that.
From the Post:
He said that before local leaders can consider Metro’s request for a guaranteed, or dedicated, source of income, “issues of budget and management accountability have to be seriously addressed.”
Meanwhile in Glover Park, there’s a man on Benton Street who hates the squeaky brakes on the D2 bus, the W.Times reports.
Also, we seemed to have missed the item in yesterday’s Post saying that a Franconia-Springfield bound Blue Line train accidentally turned off at Rosslyn and went toward Vienna-Fairfax on the Orange Line during Tuesday’s afternoon rush. Ooops.
One Series Ends, Another Continues: Just as the Post ended its series on WMATA, the Examiner started its series on immigration. Part II says that immigrants are “[n]eeded but often scorned.”
Briefly Noted: There’s been another stabbing at a Montgomery County mall … The Metropolitan Police reiterates that D.C. speed enforcement cameras are for safety and not for fast cash … And a small fire on the roof of the Rayburn House Office Building has been put out, but has clogged traffic on the House side of Capitol Hill this morning.
