FRIDAY:
>> The First Ladies DJ Collective hits the Black Cat for Girl Friday: the I Love the 90s version. As their site says, join them to “go back in time to the decade that brought us the Real World, Sassy magazine, babydoll dresses, our first war in Iraq, and not one but three Amy Fisher made-for-tv movies.” Ah, Sassy magazine. How we miss it. 10 p.m., $5, backstage.
>> Monopoli headlines tonight at Club 5 on 18th Street and Connecticut Avenue. They’ll be playing with D.C. band The Hint, Maryland’ The Heartstring Band and Boy Crazy and Louisville band Your
Black Star. 7 p.m. $10.
>> We’d be remiss in not mention the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, which started up yesterday. There’s too much to detail going on; check the schedule here and find out what fits your fancy.
SATURDAY:
>> Politics and Prose showcases a talk by David Plotz, author of The Genius Factory, a book about a sperm bank opened for Nobel laureates and other brilliant men in order to rail against an “American genetic decline.” Plotz is a deputy editor at Slate, and has written a number of fascinating articles for the site detailing his research in this matter – especially this one about his own experience as a potential sperm donor. 6 p.m.
>> The Black Cat hosts the always-fun Run For Cover, where local musicians form cover groups and play short sets that parody their favorite bands. For example, this year we’ve got The Queen Is Dead (no doubt covering The Smiths) and The Wood Sprites (Pixies). The Going Out Gurus list their other guesses as to the cover bands here. And the best part of all — all the proceeds from the night go towards funding the Fort Reno Concert Series. 9:30 p.m., $8.
>> The D.C. Caribbean Carnival, modeled after Trinidad’s Mardi Gras, hits Banneker Community Center (2500 Georgia Ave., NW) this weekend. The Carnival features steelbands, a parade, traditional Caribbean food, great costumes, and more. The fun gets started at 10 a.m. and admission will run you $5. Check out an amazing photo gallery of last year’s carnival here.
>> If you’re a devotee of photo site Flickr, you should head over to El Tamarindo Restaurant (7331 Georgia Ave., NW) from 7 p.m. – 1 a.m. for D.C.’s first flick’rite Gallery Exhibition. There’ll be DJs and printed photographs of the D.C. flickr group‘s best work.
SUNDAY:
>> If you’re willing to shell out $75, head over to the 9:30 Club, where The Reverend Al Green is sure to put on an amazing show. Doors are at 7 p.m.
>> The 9th annual Old Dominion Beer Festival finishes up its weekend-long run today. $12 grants you admission, and from then on, $1 will buy you 6oz of a variety of amazing beers. There’ll also be tons of music, games, and general fun times. Noon – 7 p.m. Direction to the Ashburn site can be found here.
