So, DCist saw “The Aristocrats” this weekend. Bob Saget is a dirty, dirty man. Seriously, you’ll never look at Full House the same way after this flick. It’s no wonder the Olsen twins ended up the way they did. Also, the guys behind South Park are geniuses. Now, to the music:
Monday: We’re tempted to send you guys to Fort Reno tonight. It’s another Dischord smashup with songstress Mary Timony headlining, possibly or possibly not accompanied by Medications‘ drummer Devin Ocampo (factoid: her latest album “Ex Hex” was produced by Brendan Canty, of Fugazi and Garland of Hours, and probably some other related bands, too). Opening for Mary is Medications, so it’s likely Ocampo will be there. The lineup also includes The Threads, and it’s as cheap as free.
But it’s hot, and at some point D.C. is going to receive the mother of all thunderstorms, so as a backup we suggest a visit to DC9. It will be dark and cool, and you’ll be treated to the DJ stylings of Galbis and Metrocide, preceded by hip-hop, stand-up comedy person Schaffer the Dark Lord. ($7)
Tuesday: The 9:30 Club has brought D.C. a treat in the west-coast indie hip-hop consortium Hieroglyphics. Consisting of, among others, Casual, Pep Love, and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Hiero’s music is smart, tight, and easily worth the $18 you’ll drop at the door.
Also worth checking out is D.C.’s own The Alphabetical Order (at left). They’ll be playing their self-described “90s retro” (in a DCist interview no less!) with The Franchise on Black Cat‘s backstage. ($5)
Wednesday: Wednesday is a good night to visit DC9‘s hip-hop night, hosted by Shambhala. This DCist will admit he knows very little about the scheduled acts, but it’s usually enjoyable, there’s music provided by Damu the Fudge Munk, and it has to be better than Rise Against at 9:30. ($7)
Thursday: DCist loves to give props to Gogol Bordello, if for no other reason than it’s rare one gets to type “gypsy/punk.” They’ll be at the Black Cat with Throw Rag. ($13, mainstage)
In other interesting news, the High Dials are playing the Velvet Lounge. Now, we’re hoping someone out there in the readership can give us the definitive answer on the following question. Velvet’s website advertises the High Dials as “ex-Datsuns,” the Datsuns being the 70s-retro-garage band with songs like, “Like a Motherfucker from Hell.” The High Dials website advertises themselves as ex-Datsons, who now play a song called, “War of the Wakening Phantoms.” Probably an honest mistake, but we’d be pissed if we went for the Datsuns and got the Datsons.
Oh, and we forgot about Metropolitan at Fort Reno. You should totally go check them out.
Friday: Friday is all about accessibility with Rainer Maria at 9:30 (with Hail Social and Pash, $12) and the alt-country Last Train Home at Iota (catch them before they open for Dolly Parton!, $12)
Saturday: Feel free to visit Finch at the 9:30 Club, but there’s also some great local music about. Pop-ish The Positions (they have a flugelhornist!) are having a CD release night at DC9 with the Soft Complex and Delegate. ($8) Also, the always noteworthy Exit Clov are playing Velvet. So, maybe catch Finch some other time.
Sunday: Probably the best thing to do on a Sunday, any Sunday really, is see some ska. You could call it the Skabbath. Or not, if that’s terribly offensive. But there happens to be some, in the form of Catch 22 at the 9:30, if that’s your thing. ($10)
