We were happy to read that the steamy hot temps will ease all week with highs expected in the 80s and evening lows in the 60s. While we were cruising Flickr to find today’s photo, taken by Aziz Gökdemir of the ever-photogenic interior of the National Building Museum, we came across an interesting new group: “the real dc.” According to the description, “this is dc beyond the tourist traps and politicians; I’m a dc native, and would like to disabuse those with the notion that dc is a one-industry town … ” We encourage our readers on Flickr to share any appropriate images of the city they have in their collections.
Black Gay Rights Groups Plan March: Black gay rights groups are making preliminary plans for a separate rally in October during 10th-anniversary commemoration of the Million Man March, the Post reports. The groups are still negotiating for a representative of the gay community to speak at the event, but activism for a separate gathering was fueled by march organizer Rev. Willie F. Wilson’s comments about young lesbians last week.
Smart Growth Planners Target Exurbs: Smart Growth advocates and government planners in Maryland’s Spotsylvania and Charles counties are seeking more pedestrian-style development to encourage walking and prevent the problems of Tyson’s corner, the Post reports. The changes include rewritten rules that
encourage a series of urban-style villages where people would feel more comfortable walking to shop, eat and go to work. New roads, such as a pending cross-county connector, are required to include trails for walkers and cyclists.
Ward 5 Group Fights Private Prison: A community group in Ward 5 is hoping that a recent legal decision will mean the end of a bitter legal dispute over a private correctional facility there, the W. Times reports. The company operating the prison sued a community group and the neighborhood ANC after they tried to block the facility on the grounds it would endanger the neighborhood. It’s unclear if the facility will be forced to close.
