On Friday, DCist readers engaged in some relatively civil back and forth over the much publicized America Supports You Freedom Walk, an event organized by the Department of Defense to honor the service of the country’s countless men and women in uniform and to memorialize the death of those who lost their lives four years ago at the Pentagon. Taking place today, thousands of people, pictured above, gathered at the Pentagon and followed a relatively short route to the Mall, where country artist Clint Black was set to play some rousing patriotic tunes. No doubt the debate will continue — Was this an underhanded way for the Bush Administration to link the 9/11 tragedy to the current and unpopular war in Iraq, or was it simply a well-intentioned yet largely misunderstood effort to pay tribute to the nation’s armed forces? We’ll let DCist readers offer their opinions, and we’ll have our own first-hand account soon.

Here are some of the things you may have missed in the last week:

— DCist turns one, plans itself a birthday party.

— We interviewed a variety of local artists: DJ Tittsworth, Death by Sexy, Barakus, and Full Minute of Mercury.

— Borf went on vacation.

— A DCist reader took on our challenge — she caught Cornel West with a jumbo slice.

— The uber-ritzy Capitol File hit the streets.

— We previewed the Washington Redskins, who go into action today.

— We asked the question: Is there price gouging going on at local gas pumps?

— We found the area’s cheapest sushi.
