District residents are particularly immune to motorcades. There isn’t much that will make us stop and crane our necks these days, especially not the site of the traffic-inducing, gas-guzzling lines of cars that ferry the country’s leaders to and from home and work.
But for the next three days, one of those motorcades could be carrying royalty.
Yes, we near jumped out of our skin when we found out that Britain’s Prince Charles and his wife Camilla would grace our fair city with their royal presence. We’re closet Charles and Camilla fanatics.
But about as close to non-federal Washington and us commoners as Camilla and Charles will be getting is their visit today to the School of Educational Evolution and Development, a public charter boarding school in Southeast. Joined by D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams and First Lady Laura Bush, the royal couple will tour the school — which, unlike many of the District’s public schools, isn’t collapsing in on itself — as part of an agenda that includes two meals at the White House, a stop at the National Institutes of Health, and an award ceremony at the National Building Museum.
This is all fine and good, but DCist couldn’t be more tickled with the idea that the royal couple engage in some un-royal activities. How about a half-smoke at Ben’s Chili Bowl? Love or hate the place, it is a Washington institution. Or a drink at an Adams Morgan watering hole? A ride on the Metro? A visit to Little Ethiopia?
So, DCist readers: Where should they go? What should they do? What should they eat and drink? What would make their visit to the District truly memorable?
Leave us your ideas in the comments section.
