Remember all those times we’ve off-handedly mentioned that this winter would be slow for concerts? Well, the time is here. And comparisons to molasses or sloths or other slow moving things aren’t far off. We all need some down time though, right? Those three concert weeks were starting to wear me down, and I want to be all fresh and shiny for the new year. There are a few things afoot, however, so take note and rock on.
WEDNESDAY
>> Hear those crickets? Maybe you could watch the Rose Bowl, or help out the film industry and catch a flick.
THURSDAY
>> Support the local music that DCist supports! Catch Three Stars alums Full Minute of Mercury at Iota. You wouldn’t want to miss “Viper Room-style sleazy excess shot through with a workaday innocence—as if Warrant and Missing Persons reformed to collaborate on the soundtrack of a lost John Hughes movie,” now would you? $10, 9 p.m.
>>There’s also a very nice indie rock show at DC9 on Thursday as The Opposite Sex bring their intense visuals and spacey New Wave to the stage, along with the shoegaze rock of the Skydivers and additional Three Star vet Lejeune. $8.
FRIDAY
>> For those of us that spent countless hours as college first years in the beer-soaked basement of Theta Delt, Virginia Coalition holds a special place in our hearts. Maybe a little rock bongo action is just what you needed to shake up your week. At 9:30, $17.50, 9 p.m.
>> Now that the days of frat parties are long behind me, however, my favorite way to finish out a week is by dancing some holes in the soles of my shoes at DC9‘s Liberation Dance Party. Get your indie rock yayas out with the rest of the hipsters in town. But beware the not-Red Bull on tap, it guarantees a Saturday headache for this DCist. $5, 9:30 p.m.
SATURDAY
>> Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, take a siesta and watch the Redskins in their first playoff game since ’99. At 4:30 on ABC.
>>After that, consider heading to Black Cat for the catchy, up-tempo indie rock of Supersystem, playing with Ris-Paul-Ric, formerly of Q and Not U, currently rocking it solo. $9.
>> I’ve heard from some friends that there’s still some love floating around the city for ska. It was never much my bag, but more power to ya. Area skankers will find a thrill at 9:30 tonight as locals The Pietasters take the stage. With The Slackers, 33 West and Rootworkers, $15, 9 p.m.
