Listen Washington, we know this will be hard to be believe, but we really had intended not to beat this whole George Allen racial slur thing to death. Problem is, like a zombie dressed in body armor, this one is just awfully tough to kill. Now this morning the Associated Press has the word that President Bush has agreed to fundraise for Allen, even after the senator’s sizable lead over his opponent Jim Webb was destroyed by fallout over the “macaca” incident. Given how low Bush’s approval ratings already are, it’s hard to believe this questionable choice could hurt the president too much more than he’s already hurt himself, but stranger things have happened. In fact, George Allen might want to think about whether such visible support from Bush could potentially hurt him more than it helps. So what happens when two men without life vests cling to each other to avoid drowning in a watery abyss? Stay tuned to find out.
Former School Chief Indicted in PG County: An indictment from a federal grand jury came down yesterday for controversial former Prince George’s County schools chief Andre J. Hornsby. The charges included arranging school contracts with two personal friends, including his girlfriend, in exchange for kickbacks worth over $100,000. Talk about questionable decisions: federal agents apparently even have Hornsby on tape accepting a cash down payment in a motel room. Not quite as awesome as finding cash in the freezer, but close. And we thought D.C. public schools had problems.
Could Green Line Go to BWI ? Maryland’s business and economic development secretary said yesterday that an extension of Metrorail’s Green Line to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport should be the state’s top transportation priority, not the proposed Purple Line. We admit, if there was a way to take Metro all the way to BWI, it might well become our airport of choice. It’s already prefereable to Dulles in pretty much every circumstance, and it certainly has more flight options available than National. But would we prefer it to going forward with the Purple line? We’re going to reserve the right to make a questionable decision on that one until after we’ve had more coffee.
