Update: The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for southern Prince William County, specifically around Woodbridge (where the IKEA is). This follows warnings in Spotsylvania County, Fredericksburg, and Stafford County, so that means it’s headed our direction. The storm is moving North at 60 m.p.h., so it may not be long before warnings are issued for our immediate area. We’ll keep you apprised.
Be careful going outside today, folks: The National Weather Service has just issued a tornado watch for the District of Columbia lasting until 6 p.m. this evening. Additionally, they’ve issued a coastal flood warning for most of the Washington area until 12 p.m. tomorrow.
Though it always seem strange to consider a tornado taking place in D.C., the area has actually had a history of some freak twisters coming down, so keep your eyes on the sky and turn on your television or radio to keep updated. Or, as savvy D.C. weather folks like to do, continuously hit F5 on CapitalWeather.com, and they’ll keep you in the know.
Do take care out there today, whether you’re walking, biking or driving. The Post reports that the system heading towards the area has left nine people dead yesterday and early today as it moved across the South. Hopefully the most we’ll get here is the predicted 1-2 inches of rain and 60 mph gusts of wind.
