A weekend full of college basketball saw all four major D.C. area programs hosting games against teams ahead of them in the respective conference standings. Two emerged with convincing wins, while two others suffered disappointing losses.

On Saturday, Georgetown leapfrogged No. 11 Marquette into second place in the Big East with a 76-58 victory in front of an announced 17,867 at the Phone Booth. Jeff Green helped break open a close one around the six-minute mark, scoring ten straight points as the Hoyas went on a 21-6 to end the game.

Georgetown won this one on the strength of its starting frontcourt, despite getting no point production from the bench. Green matched a career high with 24 points, and Roy Hibbert notched his fifth double-double of the season – and third in four games – with 23 points and 11 rebounds. The Hoyas turned in a strong defensive effort, too, holding Marquette to 34 percent shooting and harassing Golden Eagle star guard Dominic James into 2-for-17 shooting from the field.

The program celebrated its 100th anniversary with a ceremony at halftime. That included the announcement of a Georgetown all-century team, headlined by four-time All-American, 1985 national player of the year, and future 11-time NBA All-Star Patrick Ewing.

On Sunday, Maryland kept their slim NCAA Tournament hopes alive with a 72-60 victory over No. 16 Duke. After going down 5-0 thanks to a couple of Greg Paulus jumpers, the Terrapins used stifling defense and explosive transition offense to score 29 of the next 33 points. Duke would cut the lead to six midway through the second half, but a 12-4 Maryland run keyed by a pair of Mike Jones jumpers put the tired visitors away. Freshman Greivis Vasquez led a balanced attack with a career-high 18 points, and James Gist (16), Ekene Ibekwe (13), and D.J. Strawberry (10) joined him in double figures.

A win over Duke is still a win over Duke, but this one comes with a little less of the luster that usually accompanies a victory over the Terps’ most hated rival; according to the Times story, “only a smattering” of students stormed the court after the final buzzer. That’s partially because Maryland is hardly in rarefied company beating this edition of the Blue Devils: The loss to Maryland gave Duke its first four-game losing streak in 11 years.
