The Wizards and Timberwolves both played like they were still suffering from Las Vegas induced hangovers last night but Washington rode the hot hand of Gilbert Arenas and got some timely contributions from his teammates in the Wiz’s 112-100 win. Honestly, this game was a bit of a snoozer. The Wizards shot over 50% from the field and built up a sizable lead in the first half, weathered the inevitable run from the TWolves in the third, before cruising to an easy win that should thankfully quiet all the “Oh no! Antawn is still injured” talk for a few days.
But while the play on court was dull at times, the banter in the post game locker room was anything but. Agent Zero uncharacteristically jetted before talking to the press throngs, but DeShawn Stevenson was there to pick up the slack. Stevenson, who scored a season high 23 points on 9-11 shooting, was clearly feeling frisky after having such a good game while having his new girlfriend, former Destiny’s Child member LeToya Luckett, in the crowd.
“Coach said no one can talk to me if they’re not shooting 50% [from the field — Stevenson’s shooting rose his season percentage to 50.1 last night]. It’s going to be quiet for a minute. Brendan and Etan are the only two cats that can call my cell phone. [Everyone else] has to talk to coach and then coach has to talk to me. If Brendan calls me and Gilbert clicks in [on three way calling], then yeah, we can talk.”
Another reporter asked DeShawn about the aforementioned Hibachi and he kept going without breaking stride. “No, he’s the Hibachi,” he remarked. “But I’m ‘Mr. 50.’ Put that in the newspaper so Gilbert will get mad. He reads the newspaper every day, he might go crazy.” He kept on, “Oh, Gil knows [that Stevenson’s shooting over 50% for the season]. It’s in his blog.” Another reporter stated if DeShawn keeps this up, he could start his own blog. “I’ll have to do that,” he replied. “I’ll call it ‘Mr. 50.'” Someone else suggested the nickname “Inspector 50.” “I like that,” Stevenson said excitedly. “I’ll have to put that on my blog.”
