It may be cold and rainy, but there’s still plenty of reasons to smile on this fine Friday morning. Maryland and Georgetown won, VCU triumphed over Duke in one of those only-in-March exciting final two minutes, and … oooh, right. Sorry about that GWU. Ouch. How are your brackets doing this morning, Washington? More of course will be coming later from our crack team of sportsologists.
Voting Rights That Much Closer: DCist already reported on the great news yesterday, but it’s worth repeating. The House Judiciary Committee has endorsed legislation granting the District a voting seat in the House of Representatives, and the measure will be sent for a full House vote by the end of the month. Over at the Post, Mary Beth Sheridan has another great recap, also reporting that the vote is expected some time next week. The Posties also have a handy explainer up about the bill itself, in case you’re still confused about it.
D.C. Attorney General Expected to be Confirmed: Based on the tone of a hearing yesterday, the D.C. Council looks set to confirm Mayor Adrian Fenty’s nominee for D.C. Attorney General, Acting Attorney General Linda Singer. Even professional Fenty heckler Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) had praise for Singer’s recent handling of the negotiations between the city and the Rosembaum family, according to the Examiner. Concerns that Singer hadn’t actually been practicing law in the District before her nomination seem to have been overblown.
Briefly Noted: We hope none of our readers were set to fly JetBlue this morning, as they’ve canceled a number of flights out of Dulles due to the weather … Veteran official to head charter school system, for now … Pedestrians hit by hit-and-run in Tenley circle … If several DCist editors had gone to high school in Maryland, we’d be in danger of not having driver’s licenses due to truancy … City’s disability compensation program overpaid one of its subcontractors, according to a new audit.
This Day in DCist: In 2006 we visited local photographer Samantha Wolov in her studio, and in 2005 we recommended a few places to look for spring and summer sports options.
