Last Friday’s D.C. Council hearing on pedestrian and bicycle safety was certainly one of the more emotional in recent memory, featuring several stories about cyclists and pedestrians who were killed or severely injured in incidents with vehicles. Greater Greater Washington’s David Alpert, who testified at the hearing, is keeping the hearing in the limelight by posting a series of testimonial videos on YouTube. The first in that series comes from Ruth Rowan, the mother of Alice Swanson, who was killed while riding her bicycle near Dupont Circle in July 2008.

It’s an undoubtedly heartbreaking clip, precisely what you would expect from a mother who lost her daughter in a tragic incident and, more than two years later, is still coming to terms with why. (The driver of the garbage truck which hit Swanson had accrued several violations in the months leading up to Swanson’s death.)

But Rowan’s tale was only the tip of the iceberg of sorrowful tales from the hearing. This morning, GGW uploaded another clip from the hearing: the testimony of Nancy Szemraj, whose daughter was struck by a car while crossing Connecticut Avenue at Macomb Street in Cleveland Park last summer.
