Greater Greater Washington writes that the D.C. Department of Transportation has asked Metro to change the names of four Metro stations within city limits.

On the Green Line, “Waterfront – SEU” will become “Waterfront – Arena Stage,” a natural progression seeing as Southeastern University shut its doors in 2009, and “Navy Yard” will become “Navy Yard – Ballpark,” thankfully sparing us from the curly-W that was initially proposed. On the Red Line, “New York Ave. – Florida Ave. – Gallaudet U.” will turn into “New York Ave. – NoMa,” with “Gallaudet University” as a subtitle. (That’s a pretty huge win for NoMa’s branding campaign for sure.) On the Orange and Blue lines, the Smithsonian stop will get a “National Mall” subtitle.

A number of other requested name changes didn’t make DDOT’s cut, including a proposal to add “Kennedy Center” as a subtitle to the Foggy Bottom – GWU station. Other proposals were also scrapped:

The Golden Triangle BID also asked to add its name to one of the Farragut stations, and Capitol Riverfront wanted to be on Navy Yard, though DDOT didn’t advance those requests. ANC Commissioner Kent Boese has been pushing to change Georgia Ave-Petworth to Georgia Ave-Petworth/Park View or Petworth-Park View.

It costs roughly $100,000 to change all the signage in a station, and all but one of these name proposals violates a Metro policy aiming to limit station names to 19 characters.
