Good morning, Washington. The bad news is that today looks like it’ll be a little bit cloudy. The good news is that as of 8 a.m., WMATA reports no Metro service alerts. The weekend promises just the opposite: Saturday and Sunday’s weather will be pleasant, but WMATA says that all five Metro tracks will be undergoing work. Add in the local disruptions that will be caused by Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon, and you’ve got some good reasons to stay above-ground. Sounds to us like a good excuse for a brisk walk or bike ride.
Immigrants Sue Ehrlich: The Washington Times reports that the Maryland governor is being taken to court by lawyers for eight immigrant children. The suit was motivated by Ehrlich’s cuts from the state’s Medicaid rolls — cuts that the litigants say unfairly singled out legal immigrants, whose inability to vote makes them an easy target for service reductions.
D.C. Schools Superintendent Gets Bonus, Contract Extension: Clifford Janey has been given $25,000 and a one-year contract extension as a reward for his performance leading the city’s public school system. The Board of Education said that, among other initiatives, Janey’s introduction of stronger standards and better hiring practices justified the bonus, which was awarded as part of Janey’s first annual performance review.
Postal Workers Press Their Case: WTOP reports that seventeen employees from the Brentwood Postal Facility have asked a Circuit of Appeals panel to reinstate their lawsuit against the Postal Service. The workers maintain that they were kept on the job while the facility was dangerously contaminated with anthrax — and their lawyer implies that racism was behind management’s decision. The litigants’ lawsuit was previously denied by a lower court.
