Maryland’s men’s basketball team took a serious hit Monday with the announcement that senior shooting guard Chris McCray has been ruled academically ineligible and will miss the rest of the season, thus ending his career at Maryland. McCray has captained the Terps each of the last two seasons, and with 15.2 points per game, was the team’s leading scorer. He’s also one of the team’s few deep threats and maybe its best perimeter defender. With McCray’s career over, three-point specialist Mike Jones figures to get more minutes at shooting guard, and he and the rest of the Terps — most notably Nik Caner-Medley — will have to pick up the scoring and leadership slack.

“Chris’s career was outstanding here at the University of Maryland,” Maryland head coach Gary Williams said in a statement. “He has contributed a great deal to our success the last 3 1/2 years. I’m fully confident Chris will be successful in life.”

The 18th-ranked Terps will begin the post-McCray era tomorrow night at Georgia Tech.
