Good morning, Washington, and our apologies to the residents of Montgomery County — we hate to be the bearers of bad news. But it looks like speed cameras will be coming to your fair municipality. The general assembly has overridden Governor Ehrlich’s second veto, putting the wheels in motion for a statewide program. Montgomery County will be the lucky recipient of the first pilot cameras.

Gallaudet Still A Mess: Protests; counter-protests; defiant non-resignations. And now the football team is blockading the gates. Fantastic. There isn’t much to say, to be honest, other than to note that the situation is ongoing and the administration is beginning to lose its patience. Well, okay, there is one thing. Today’s Post article closes with this apparent non sequitur:

Professor Bob Harrison, who said he understood the protesters’ concerns but wanted to teach, nodded. “There’s a real problem with communication here,” he said.

Clap… clap… clap. Hilarious, guys. Really.

Maryland Orders Paper Ballots: Better safe than sorry. Despite Maryland elections administrator Linda Lamone’s expressions of confidence in the state’s electronic voting machines, Maryland has just put in a large order for paper ballots. As WTOP reports, some of these ballots will be used for absentee voting. But the total volume of ballots is apparently two to three times more than Maryland’s typical order, presumably to ensure that elections officials will be ready if there’s another rash of failures among the Diebold machines.

Asia Trail Gets Media Debut: Yesterday was media day at the zoo’s new Asia Trail. Fog machines? See-ment ponds? Nothing’s too good for Butterstick, we suppose. Pretty much everyone has got a write-up; take your pick. Or, better yet, go see the exhibit for yourself when it opens to the public next Tuesday, October 17.

Briefly Noted: Threats to MoCo schools were a hoax… Culpeper man arrested in school bomb threat… Islamic Center of Washington D.C. files suit against longtime financial manager amid embezzlement accusations… Mental health patients in Northern Virginia facing bed shortage… Ehrlich no longer only notable recipient of slots money in Md. gubernatorial race…

This Day In DCist: One year ago we considered wine lists at the city’s Asian restaurants and examined the odds of a Bobb candidacy (turns out they weren’t good). Two years ago we stalked Matthew Lesko and compared Maryland to North Korea.
