Desk Sofa: Anna Nicole Smith has died in Florida. Smith was reportedly found in unconscious in her Hollywood, Fla. hotel room and pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Looking back, it’s hard to remember all that made Smith a tabloid celeb but we’re sure we’ll be seeing a Law & Order “ripped from the headlines” reminding us soon. [CNN.com]
>> Never let it be said D.C. artists don’t take care of their own. Local legends Thievery Corporation announced today they’ll be headlining the Callum Robbins Family Fund show at the Black Cat on Sunday, March 11. The story of indie rock pioneers J. Robbins and Janet Morgan’s son’s battle with spinal muscular atrophy has brought together the local community in support. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 5 p.m. and are sure to be snatched-up quickly.
>> No, that’s not a new tributary of the Potomac on 19th Street, it’s one of the city’s dozens of water main breaks. As crews scramble to fix all this flowing due to cold temps WASA has tips on keeping residential pipes from bursting, but it seems little can be done to protect underground pipes from contracting and expanding in extreme temperatures. Thanks a lot, Al Gore. I could have really used some global warming this morning while attempting to shower under a trickle of freezing water from a broken main. Thanks a lot. [NBC4.com]
>> Looks like awareness of the District’s disenfranchisement dilemma has made it to the Maryland State Senate. Unfortunately it seems as though Sen. Jamie Raskin, D-Montgomery, figures misery loves company and is set to hurl his state into their own special electoral hell. His over-arching problems with the Electoral College spurred Raskin to propose that Maryland’s 10 electoral votes go to the winner of the national popular vote in the next Presidential election, rather than to the winner of Maryland’s own vote. In practice this would mean Bush would have received Maryland’s electors in 2004, despite 56% of voters choosing Kerry. While the Electoral College system surely deserves examination, we’re sure Free Staters will been none too pleased with the current proposal. [WTOP]
