It’s back to school time, and that means we’re once again recruiting new writers to become part of our growing team of city bloggers. As you know, we aren’t able to pay our contributors — so please don’t apply unless you’re ready to do it for the love of exploring D.C., engaging in important debates about the direction of the city, or are just the kind of person who’s happy enough to see your name in big letters on the intertubes.

Of course, that’s not to suggest there aren’t perks associated with becoming part of our cult web site. Many of our contributors are regularly invited to restaurant openings, score free concert tickets, get CDs and books sent to them in the mail without even asking (OK, actually that’s less of a perk and more of an annoyance), and are invited to appear on radio and television to represent the site — not to mention we’re always throwing staff parties and happy hours. We’ve also seen a number of past DCists recruited away by other publications based on their work for us, including Washingtonian magazine, The Washington Post Express, Huffington Post, and The Examiner. If you’re struggling to get work out there as a freelancer, joining DCist can be a great place to start.

These are the positions we’re currently looking to fill. If interested, please email the contact listed next to the individual position with 2-3 writing samples and a short email introducing yourself. If you already have your own blog, great! Make sure to send us the link, too.

>> A dance critic. Please be well versed in either arts writing or have a real dance background, not just someone who’s a fan. Email Heather Goss at heather(at)dcist.com.

>> A new transportation columnist. Our wonderful friend and longtime transportation columnist Colin Peppard is retiring from Transit on Thursdays (and occasionally Tuesdays and Fridays), and we’re looking for another transpo planning geek to fill his rather large shoes. Please be someone who gets hot and bothered about HOT lanes and thrills at pouring over dedicated funding measures. Email Sommer Mathis at sommer(at)dcist.com.

>> General news writers and those who can “Observe D.C.” on a regular basis. We’re also eventually looking to replace our News Editor out of this crop of people. Contact sommer(at)dcist.com.

>> Foodies and bar flys, please send letters of interest to Adam Bailey at adam(at)dcist.com. We’re looking for a general restaurant critic and someone to cover bars and happy hours.

>> We’d love to have someone dedicated to covering the major museums in the area. Email heather(at)dcist.com.

>> Plugged in to the GLBT scene and able to write lucidly and vividly about it? Contact sommer(at)dcist.com.

UPDATE: Also, we’d love to recruit one local college student to do a weekly roundup of the top news in all the college newspapers in the area. If you’re a college student in D.C., email sommer(at)dcist.com.
