July 4th Crowd Gets Tamer: The authorities report that cleanup of the National Mall didn’t find any upholstered furniture, kegs, or mattresses, like in pre-checkpoint years. In fact, the garbage they did find was less than in recent years, and “At the checkpoints, police seized some alcohol and a few knives, but even the piles of confiscated items are growing smaller every year.” It’s not for lack of attendance: 540,875 people rode Metro on July 4th, up from 363,280 one year ago.
Assault Thwarted at Dupont: A woman is in “serious but stable” condition after a stabbing at 15th and Corcoran Streets NW. The Post reports that the assailant was being held to the ground by several neighbors when police arrived, an eyewitness saying “It took five guys on top of him to get him to stop.” Also, the Examiner reports an 18-year-old shooting victim died after crashing his car into a house in Southeast.
