And a glorious Friday to you, Washington. Granted, it’s not exactly pleasant out right now, but we’re going to boldly agree completely with the National Weather Service about tomorrow: highs in the mid-50s, with plenty of sun (peeking through a few clouds). We’ll take it. After the week we’ve had, we would have taken Antarctica, just as long as we got to sleep in a little and not have to think about work for at least 24 hours.
Walter Reed Change Criticized: We mentioned it in the GHA yesterday, but it’s worth a look at the full story from the WaPo about the Army’s firing of Army Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman, the commander of Walter Reed Army Medical Center since August. Instead of bringing in someone not at all involved in the scandal, the Army has temporarily named Lt. Gen. Kevin C. Kiley, the commander before Weightman, who has also been implicated in the Washington Post series that exposed the squalid living conditions for some outpatient soldiers. Eventually, the Army says it will name a new, permanent head of the hospital. We hope they don’t drag their feet on this, for the sake of the wounded soldiers being treated there, and of course for Dana Priest, who apparently found some extra space in her trophy room.
A Day Labor Center for D.C.? Just when the furor over a dedicated site for day laborers to gather to find work has died down in Gaithersburg, Councilmember Harry Thomas (D-Ward 5) is calling for a similar site in D.C. to ease tension in the neighborhood surrounding the Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood metro stop. The area includes two grocery stores and Home Depot, all often used by Latino immigrants in search of a day’s work.
Briefly Noted: Fenty blames missed deadline on typo … Some teachers upset with their union’s endorsement of Fenty’s school plan … Still not close to a verdict in Libby perjury case … House built by mistake may be taken apart in pieces … D.C. Schools open technical academy.
This Day in DCist: In 2006 we wished we had a Wawa, and in 2005 we recommended some good places to buy CDs (which is a little sad to read now).
