Kansas Senator Warns D.C. to Watch Its Step: Sen. Sam Brownback, the Kansas Republican who chairs the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on the District of Columbia, says he’s watching the District closely after D.C.’s attorney general said that “validly married same-sex couples” may file joint tax returns in the District, the Post reports. Brownback, a noted conservative, said he wants to hear more from Mayor Williams, who tells the Post that a move to recognize gay marriage could be answered with fierce retaliation from Capitol Hill.

Alexandria’s Loss Is Rock Creek’s Gain: Rock Creek’s Pierce Mill will see the construction of a fish ladder as part of an environmental impact swap because of the loss of vegetation from the construction of the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge across the Potomac. WTOP reports that the fish ladder will be constructed from $2 million of Federal Highway Administration funds. The fish ladder will be finished in 2006.

No Acelas ‘Til Summer: Travel up and down the Northeast Corridor will impacted for the next few months through the summer with all express Acela train service sidelined as defective brake roters are being fixed. According to Bloomberg:

They produce about $25 million a month in sales, 22 percent of Amtrak ticket revenue, and carry about 9,000 passengers a month, about 5 percent of total ridership. Amtrak hasn’t said how much revenue it’s losing.

Update: We have an update about a question we posed earlier this week about the park across the street from the Chinese Embassy which has been fenced off. We hear that the National Park Service is simply resodding the park at Kalorama Road and Connecticut Avenue. The park is used by frequently used by Falun Dafa followers for protests. Thanks to our faithful readers who tracked down the answer.
