Problems Haunt Fenty’s Top Model: Just as Mayor Fenty’s school takeover plan clears another hurdle, this morning’s Post asks whether the Charlotte school system, on which much of the scheme is based, is really successful. In addition to being larger and less urban than the District, the North Carolina schools have a hard time maintaining academic achievement through students’ high school years. There are also serious discrepancies in the performance of white and minority students, a factor sure to spark controversy in the majority minority D.C. public school system.
George Mason Students Want Guns on Campus: A group of students at Fairfax’s GMU are asking the university to lift its ban on concealed weapons on campus. GMU Students for Concealed Carry was formed after last month’s shooting tragedy at Virginia Tech. A spokesman for the college said they have no plans to allow weapons at the school. Let the outrage on both sides begin…
